About Us

Church should be a place for wounded souls, an island of safety and support for forgiven followers of Jesus to grow in grace. It should be a hearth to warm us, a table to gather at where we explore our place in this complex and challenging world we live in. Church should be a place where we can gather and receive support.

Like our homes, churches can become damaged. When that happens, sometimes we have no choice but to move out. Sometimes we escape the damage and look for shelter somewhere else or just give up. When our spiritual communities become unhealthy, we suffer instead of growing in our faith journey.

If you have been spiritually homeless, and have felt the deep relief of being out of the toxic confines of a church, we understand. Without a healthy community of spiritual support, we fail to grow, and are not supported and we find ourselves in a never-ending cycle of “try hard, do good and fail.”

So rather than abandoning church, Washington Street UMC is committed to removing the judgmental and overbearing parts of toxic religion so that you can find that place of healing, grace and mercy. Come and help us grow together as we build a community to help one another thrive and flourish on your spiritual journey.

Community Outreach

As passionate followers of Jesus, we hold strong belief in his commandment, "As I have loved you, so you must love one another." Hence, we strive to assist those in our community who are in dire need. To that end, we organize community events to provide food for the community, maintain a fully stocked food pantry, and run a community closet so that everyone may have access to basic necessities. If you would like to help us stock our food pantry or community closet, a list is provided below. Please contact us by messaging our page to arrange for pick up!
